A VLT-SINFONI Study of Local Luminous and Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

Javier Piqueras López defended in the Faculty of Mathematics of the Complutense University of Madrid his thesis work entitled "A VLT-SINFONI Study of Local Luminous and Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies" directed by Luis Colina Robledo and Santiago Arribas Mocoroa obtaining the rating of Outstanding "Cum Laude".

The importance of the Luminous and Ultraluminous Galaxies in the Infrared in the context of the evolution of the galaxies has been clearly established since its discovery , during the first years of the 70s. The (U) local LIRGs are especially useful objects for the study of the most extreme cases of star formation in compact regions, coexisting with active galactic nuclei, as well as their impact on the environment interstellar. Making use of the high spatial resolution and S / N provided by local samples, the study of nearby (U) LIRGs provides a unique opportunity to carry out detailed analyzes of these physical processes, and is a fundamental piece in the understanding of their corresponding more distant homologs.

This thesis presents, for the first time, an exhaustive study of local LIRGs and ULIRGs in the near infrared, based on observations made with the VLT-SINFONI instrument, and focused on the structure of the gas in emission, the morphology of the dust and the star formation. In addition, we present the detailed study of gas kinematics in the central regions of the M83 galaxy, focused on analyzing the role that supernovas play in "molding" the kinematics of gas at scales of dozens of parsecs.
