Master's Degree in Astrobiology


The Master's Degree in Astrobiology, the result of a joint work between the Center for Astrobiology (CAB, CSIC-INTA) and the University of Alcalá (UAH), begins its walking in this current course.

The Master in Astrobiology has among its objectives to provide advanced knowledge on the problems related to the origin of life, its evolution, its distribution in the universe and its future. The problems addressed by Astrobiology transcend the traditional boundaries between disciplines to require an integration of contributions from different areas of the natural and physical sciences that goes beyond the conventional structure of the teaching programs.

The student of this Master will participate actively in the learning of the transdisciplinary approaches inherent to these questions, such as the physics and geology of planetary systems, prebiotic chemistry, the origin of biological molecules, the organization of primitive biological systems and in extreme environments, the evolution of living beings, instrumentation for planetary exploration, self-organization in complex systems and the presence of critical phenomena in chemistry and biology, among others. To achieve these training objectives, this Master will have a theoretical / practical character.

The Master in Astrobiology will provide students with current knowledge about the questions posed by Astrobiology, as well as the research tools and methodologies for its study. The training provided will necessarily be multidisciplinary, so that, at the end of the course, the student has a solid background that allows him to direct his professional career to both research and teaching.

The ultimate objective of the Master is the training of specialists in Astrobiology. Therefore, the program covers numerous subjects belonging to the areas of physics, chemistry, geology, biology, ecology and engineering. In its design, it has been considered as a priority not only to teach theoretical studies, but to complement the studies with practices, independent research works, and lectures by specialists. In addition to specific training in each area, the Master is designed to provide the student with a different way of thinking, not only based on specialized knowledge, but in an integrating vision that allows complex issues to be addressed and resolved. This training places at the center of the problem the very issue to solve, and not the techniques that each specialist can master.

The Master will provide multidisciplinary training in a that, at the end of the course, the student has a solid background that allows him to direct his career to both research and academic sectors.

There is no similar title in the Spanish university system, neither in philosophy nor in content, so the Master's proposal formulated here is free of any redundancy with the existing postgraduate offer in our country.

The program of this Master is inserted in the goals of the UAH aimed at the integration and adaptation of the teachings for the adaptation to the European Higher Education Area. Through this program it will be possible to expand the offer of Postgraduate in scientific subjects in the field of Astrobiology, which at present are not being developed in any of the graduate or postgraduate studies of Spanish universities. In addition, it is intended to attract postgraduate students of various university degrees, national and international.
