The history of the Monte Perdido glacier


Last September, members of the Microbial Diversity Group of the Astrobiology Center (CSIC-INTA) , coordinated by the researcher Cristina Cid Sánchez , participated in a campaign on the Monte Perdido glacier, the highest calcareous massif in Europe , located in the Aragonese Pyrenees, north of Huesca, the national park of Ordesa and Monte Perdido. This campaign has been part of the field work carried out for the Paleo-ICE project & nbsp; -pulled thanks to the EXPLORA call, from the former Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (CGL2015-72167-MINECO) -.

The Dra. Ana Moreno Caballud , of the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology , is The Principal Investigator of this work, in which a total of ten researchers from two centers of the Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) and three Spanish universities: the Center for Astrobiology, the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology, the University of Zaragoza , the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the Autonomous University of Madrid .

The program that encompasses this and other campaigns, and which has the title " Is the current period the warmest of the last millennia? Evidences from the ice gl Aciar de los Pirineos ", has been developing since 2013 and, throughout this time, the project continues trying to investigate the ice age of the Monte Perdido glacier by extracting ice probes. The multi-indicator study of fossil ice includes the isotopic analysis as a potential paleotermometer, the interpretation of the palynological content in terms of the presence of vegetation cover, the quantification of the chemical component (for example, wind dust) and the identification of the associations present microorganisms, hence their astrobiological interest. The interpretation as a whole of these indicators will provide a reconstruction of past environments in the Pyrenean high mountain where other paleoclimate information files are scarce.
