The formation of clays, key to know the climate of primitive Mars


An international team, led by CAB researcher Alberto G. Fairén, has presented a new study that identifies the keys to the formation of clay on Mars, which It throws new clues to know the Martian climate about 3,500 million years ago.

The study reveals that the formation of clays on the surface Early Mars was due to relatively brief conditions of heat and humidity during a time when Mars was mostly cold. The researchers analyzed the stratigraphy and the nature of the clays observed in several regions of Mars, such as the Gale or Mawrth Vallis crater, based on how they form on Earth, and also in laboratory simulations and geochemical experiments. < div style = "text-align: justify;">
This new data helps to better understand how the weather of Mars could be during its first thousands of millions of years, during the Noéic and Hesperic Eras.
