The CAB and the INTA receive a facsimile of the map of Juan de la Cosa

John of the Thing was a Spanish cosmographer and sailor who made several trips to new lands discovered since 1492, including at least the two initial voyages of Christopher Columbus and the expedition led by Alonso de Ojeda. Fruit of that cartographic knowledge was its map of 1500, the oldest one that is conserved with the profile of the new continent.

The past October 29, the Center for Astrobiology (CAB / CSIC-INTA) and the National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA) received from the associations The Letter of Juan de la Cosa and University Naval Militias, a unique reproduction of this map, probably made on the occasion of the fourth centenary of the discovery of America.

The act in the one that became effective this donation counted on the General Director of the INTA, the general lieutenant Jose Maria Salom Piqueres; the Director of the Astrobiology Center, Miguel Mas Hesse; and representatives of the two associations: Juan Antonio Lago Novás, Juan Manuel Colón de Carvajal Osborne and José Yusty Bastarreche.

The CAB participates in several missions to Mars and in different space observatories, both in the development of its instruments and in scientific exploitation. Several of them, such as CHEOPS, JWST, PLATO or ARIEL, aim to discover and characterize the new worlds of the 21st century: exoplanets. The exhibition of the reproduction of the Letter of Juan de la Cosa in a unique venue such as the CAB, together with models of various spaceships, shows the continuity of the spirit of exploration that has always fed the human being to go further, always breaking the barriers of knowledge.
