Finding new genes that allow bacteria to adapt conditions of extreme acidity


A research group from the Department of Molecular Evolution of the Center for Astrobiology has discovered fifteen new genes that confer resistance to acidity in bacteria. The article, published in the latest issue of the journal Environmental Microbiology, is a clear reference for functional environmental metagenomics, since the genes that were found come from total DNA isolated from the microbial communities present in the waters and in the rhizosphere. of the Tinto River, one of the most acid environments that exist on the planet, with a pH around 1.5.

For the main researchers of this work, José Eduardo González-Pastor and Mª Eugenia Guazzaroni , "Knowing new mechanisms that allow bacteria to resist extreme conditions of acidity is essential to understand the development of life in extreme environments." Likewise, the study has a strong biotechnological focus, since the discovered genes were able to expand the growth capacities in acidity of three different bacteria, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas putida, frequently used in biotechnological processes. This will allow exploring new ways to use these microorganisms in industrial processes that need to be developed at low pHs, such as the production of bioethanol or bio-hydrogen.
